Posted @withregram • @ouroldvines Our penultimate speaker at the Old Vine Conference this week is Antonio Capaldo who will be interviewed by @jane.anson on his work to create an old vine category in Italy.

Antonio Capaldo’s first career was in global finance and strategy with Lazards and McKinsey but he now heads up his family winery @feudi_di_san_gregorio in Campania, Italy.

Antonio has come to see old vine heritage as critical for his family winery, and for premium Italian wine. He acknowledges that, currently, the old vine heritage of Italy is under-appreciated, despite many individual Italian producers working with great old vineyards.

Mindful of the challenges of collective activity and implementing global standards, he sees a grassroots ‘network effect’ emerging among the advocates for Old Vine Heritage that can be harnessed to create a new type of global wine category. Antonio will share his winery’s research on the opportunities and challenges of building such a category that is meaningful for consumers.

This is one of the most magical vineyards we’ve

This is one of the most magical vineyards we’ve visited- these Aglianico vines are 150 years old and still producing top quality fruit (which goes into @feudi_di_san_gregorio Serpico). The vines are huge (for scale, winemaker Pierpaolo who appears briefly is 6’4) and the vineyard is hushed like a great church, which it is in a way - a place to contemplate nature, vine growing and great wine.
